Tour Plan

Upon arrival at Asmara International Airport, you will be met, assisted, and transferred to your hotel.

After a brief rest, go exploring the capital Asmara, inscribed on the UNESCO heritage list in recognition of its unique blend of modernist and Art Deco architects, named the world’s 4th best comeback city and Africa’s best city.

Some of the wonders not to miss include the Fiat Tagliero building, the Ministry of Education Head Office (Benito's old party headquarters), the fabulously detailed Cinema Asmara (old Opera House), the Main Post Office, the Roman Cathedral, the Grand Mosque, St. Mary’s Orthodox Church, and the colorful market squares (spice, vegetable, fruit, souvenir) including the Medeber Market (a famous recycling depot) and more, each offering a glimpse into the rich Eritrea culture and tradition.

Begin your journey at dawn, driving from Asmara down the winding road to Massawa, passing through Ghindae along the way.

After a brief rest, drive from Massawa to Foro and further to the country’s popular archaeological site of Adulis and Zula, then travel back to Massawa.
Visit the ancient port of Adulis, a significant part of Eritrea culture and tradition, which once served as a renowned gateway connecting to Roman, Egyptian, and Greek empires. Explore the ruins, including the recently discovered huge ancient temple, potsherds, other uncovered ruins, and artifacts that reflect the deep roots of Eritrea culture and tradition.
Visit the Gulf of Zula, a dramatic rift along Eritrea’s coast, often regarded as the birthplace of Africa’s Great Rift Valley.

In the surroundings of Foro and Adulis, and as circumstances allow, visit the Afar ethnic group who reside nearby, offering an authentic glimpse into local ways of life.
Finally, enjoy swimming, rest and recreation at Gurgusum beach.

After an early breakfast, begin your exploration of Massawa, often called the Pearl of the Red Sea. Key attractions in this historic port city include the Northern Red Sea Regional Museum, the Tiwalet causeway, and Shafi Mosque – one of Africa’s oldest mosques. Also, visit the Imperial Palace and the Tank Monument, where three tanks that were vital in Massawa’s liberation during the remarkable Fenkel Operation are displayed. These landmarks provide a fascinating glimpse into the rich culture and heritage of Eritrea.

Visit the Rashaida ethnic group located in the environs of Massawa. The Rashaida, who are expert livestock and camel rearers and traders along the Red Sea coast, are an important part of Eritrea culture and tradition. Rashaida women are famous for their striking black and red dresses adorned with geometric patterns, paired with long veils (burqas) intricately embroidered with silver threads. Mingle with the Rashaida community and enjoy a traditional coffee ceremony, a warm reflection of Eritrea culture and tradition.

Afterwards, drive uphill from Massawa, passing through the town of Nefasit, and continue to the town of Adi Keih.

Start early this morning and after breakfast, explore the popular ancient city of Qohaito and experience the Saho ethnic group that mostly reside around Adi Keih, both deeply connected to Eritrea culture and tradition.

Enjoy a thrilling drive, some 15 km off-road from Adi Keih, to the archaeological site of Qohaito. Some of the wonders to see in Qohaito include the Safira Dam, prehistoric rock paintings, monolith stelae, ruins of pre-Christian temples, and the foundations of ancient palaces — all remarkable reflections of Eritrea culture and tradition.

Take in the breathtaking sceneries from the top of the vast canyon, overlooking all the way to the Red Sea coast.

The Saho ethnic group, belonging to the Cushitic stock, are mostly pastoralists and sedentary farmers. As expert herdsmen, they tend not only their own cattle but also those of neighboring tribes in exchange for grain. Their skills in beekeeping and their love for honey form an important aspect of Eritrea culture and tradition.

As time allows, en route, stop by the small town of Segeneiti, a lush, fertile area known for its ancient sycamore trees that once served as centers of important communal activities. One of these giant sycamore trees has been immortalized on the 5-Nakfa note, symbolizing a piece of Eritrea culture and tradition.

Finally, drive back uphill to Asmara while enjoying the stunning scenery of mountains and valleys.

After an early breakfast, experience the thrilling train excursion using the legendary 19th Century Steam Locomotive from Asmara to Areberebui and back to Asmara — a journey that offers a glimpse into the historical side of Eritrea culture and tradition.

Around Areberebui, take a short stop to encounter and mingle with the locals, mainly from the Tigrinya and Tigre tribes. Walk along the magnificent railways and bridges first laid in the early 20th century, maintained and expanded in recent times.

After a brief rest and lunch, travel downhill from Asmara to the charming city of Keren.

On the way, stop in the village and small town of Adi Tekelezan, about 37 km from Asmara.

Visit the Tigrinya ethnic group and experience firsthand their livelihood, including traditional houses called Hidmo along with their distinctive utensils — an authentic reflection of Eritrea culture and tradition. The Tigrinya, forming a majority of the Eritrean population, mainly inhabit the densely populated central and southern regions and are mostly agriculturalists and businessmen. They speak Tigrinya, one of the country’s official languages.

Upon arriving in Keren, explore the city’s highlights, including the Mariam Dearit shrine in a Baobab tree, the British and Italian World War II cemeteries, the 1930s Railway Station, St. Antony Church, and the old mosque. Each site reflects Eritrea’s rich culture and history.

After breakfast, visit the colorful and bustling Keren Monday Market, which attracts traders and tribes from the surrounding areas and offers a lively showcase of Eritrea culture and tradition.
Visit the Bilen and Tigre ethnic groups in the environs of Keren.
The Tigre ethnic group are semi-pastoralists and agriculturalists, known for their rich oral traditions, poetry, and singing — important aspects of Eritrea culture and tradition.
The Bilen ethnic group are mainly traditional farmers and traders. Bilen women are celebrated for their brightly colored clothes, nose rings (made of gold, silver, and copper, indicating their social status), and intricate henna tattoos that mimic diamond necklaces or little freckles, all beautifully representing Eritrea culture and tradition.
Mingle with the locals and enjoy a traditional coffee ceremony, a warm and enduring part of Eritrean hospitality.
Afterward, drive back to Asmara.

N.B.

If the train doesn’t operate as scheduled on Day 5, you will travel straight from Asmara to the city of Keren, where you will continue exploring the rich Eritrea culture and tradition.
Please note that the train excursion fee is not included in the tour package price; if the excursion operates, you will pay on the spot. This alternative route still ensures an immersive experience into Eritrea culture and tradition through the vibrant cities and encounters with local communities.
