Tour Plan
Upon arrival at Asmara International Airport, you will be welcomed and assisted by one of our experienced Eritrean tour guides and transferred to your hotel.
After a brief rest and breakfast, explore Asmara, known as "Piccola Roma" (Little Rome). Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since July 2017, the city is celebrated for its eclectic modernist and Art Deco architecture—characterized by stylized forms and geometric designs from the 1920s and 1930s. Asmara is also ranked as the world's 4th best comeback city and Africa's top city.
Stroll through its architectural wonders portrayed in many of its buildings such as the Fiat Tagliero building, Benito's old party headquarters (currently the Ministry of Education main office), the fabulously detailed old Opera house (now Cinema Asmara), the National Museum, the Main Post Office, the Roman Cathedral, the Orthodox St. Mary church, the Al Khulafa al Rashidun Mosque (the Grand Mosque), the colorful market squares (vegetable, spices, souvenir) including the popular Medeber recycling market, the Tank graveyard and more.
Enjoy a scenic train ride tour on a steam locomotive from Asmara down to Arberbue and back. This is Africa’s oldest railway, recently renovated, and one of the best train journeys on the continent—great even for those who aren’t train lovers.
In the afternoon, drive from Asmara to Keren, one of Eritrea’s most beautiful towns. If time permits, visit the charming town of Keren, once a favorite retreat for European visitors due to its pleasant climate and fertile land. It was also the site of key World War II battles between the British and Italians.
Key attractions in Keren include the renowned Mariam Dearit shrine inside a Baobab tree, the British and Italian World War II cemeteries, the 1930s-era railway station, the 19th-century Tigu Egyptian Fort, St. Antony's Romanesque Church and the historic mosque.
The colorful Keren market is held every Monday. Visit the bustling market that comprises camels, livestock, pottery, straw products, silver jewelry, etc.
In the afternoon, return from Keren to Asmara as part of the Eritrea tour.
The journey from Asmara down to the Red Sea coast and the historic port city of Massawa, known as the "Pearl of the Red Sea," is a highlight of the Eritrea tour.
This scenic route, called Pendici Orientalis ("Eastern Slope"), is one of Eritrea’s most breathtaking drives. It features countless zigzag bends, stunning mountain views, fresh cool air and occasional mist that adds a mystical touch. The tour showcases some of the most dramatic and diverse landscapes in Eritrea, making it a perfect day excursion.
Upon arrival in Massawa, take a short rest before exploring this historic port city, known as the "City of Islands." For centuries, Massawa has been a key trading hub in the Eritrea region. Its charming Turkish-style architecture, bustling shopping arcades and beautiful mosques create a unique atmosphere. The city is also known for its fresh and flavorful seafood, which is a favorite among visitors exploring Eritrea.
Beyond its cultural attractions, Massawa offers pristine beaches and excellent swimming spots just a short distance from the city center, making it one of Eritrea’s top coastal destinations.
Enjoy an exciting boat tour from Massawa to the stunning and pristine Dissie and Madote Islands in Eritrea.
These islands, part of the Dahlak Archipelago in Eritrea, are among the most popular and scenic destinations, located 22 miles and 17 miles south of Massawa, respectively. They feature beautiful beaches, vibrant coral reefs and diverse birdlife. There’s also a chance to spot marine life such as groupers, snappers, lionfish, sea turtles and even dolphins while exploring the waters of Eritrea.
Boat trip back to Massawa
Continue the remaining Massawa city tour.
Visit the vibrant Rashaida tribes, the last Semitic people to settle in Eritrea. The Rashaida women are renowned for their striking black and red geometrically patterned dresses and their distinctive burqas, which are beautifully adorned with silver threads, beads and sometimes seed pearls.
In the morning, visit the ancient port of Adulis, once a major gateway to civilization and a key trade hub among the greatest ports of the ancient world, with connections to the Roman, Egyptian, and Greek empires.
Explore and tour the Gulf of Zula, a deep inlet along Eritrea’s coastline and the birthplace of the Great Rift Valley in Africa.
Then, drive back to Massawa.
Drive back to Massawa.
Drive from Massawa via Dekemhare to Adikeyh, then continue further to Qohaito (Kohaito), located about 15 km off-road from Adikeyh in Eritrea.
Set out on an exciting trek to this renowned historical site in Eritrea, home to a remarkable collection of archaeological remains that reveal centuries of history.
Highlights of Qohaito include the Safira Dam, ancient rock paintings, monolithic stelae, and the foundations of ancient palaces.
Travel from Adikeyh to Senafe, followed by an exciting trek to Metera (Matara), an ancient town in Eritrea dating back to the 2nd century AD, identified with the historic town of Koleo. Located 20 km south of Qohaito, Metera is home to some of Eritrea’s most significant historical sites.
Notable landmarks in Metera include a 2.5m-tall stele featuring a unique pre-Christian symbol of the sun over a crescent moon—representing a South Arabian divinity—engraved on its eastern face. Other highlights include the ruins of a royal palace and an ancient tomb chamber, showcasing Eritrea’s rich history.
Drive uphill to Asmara, taking in the breathtaking scenery and lush landscapes along the way.
En route, stop at Segeneiti, a fertile town known for its rich vegetation. Visit the enormous Sycamore tree, locally called "Daero," which is cherished for its shade, role as a home for beehives and its cultural significance as a gathering place for community discussions. This iconic tree is even featured on the five-nakfa currency note.
The name "Mendefera" comes from the Tigrinya language, meaning "nobody dared," a tribute to the bravery of its people who defended their land in Eritrea against the Italian advance. The town is uniquely situated between two hills that rise on either side of the main road.
Key attractions in Mendefera include its vibrant market, the historic mosque, and the old Saint George Church (San Giorgio Church).
Travel onward to Adi Quala, a picturesque market town located 32 km from Mendefera and 88 km from Asmara. It is surrounded by lush greenery, agricultural fields, small shops, and cafés, offering stunning views of the Eritrean countryside.
A significant site in Adi Quala is the Italian Mausoleum, an imposing structure built during Mussolini’s rule in the 1930s. Decorated with fascist-era motifs and encircled by stone lions and iron chains, it commemorates 8,000 Italian soldiers who lost their lives in the failed invasion of Ethiopia in March 1890.
N.B-The price for the train excursion fee is not included in the tour package. If a Train excursion is not available on day 2, you will directly travel to Keren. For the train tour in Eritrea, you will pay on the spot.
