Upon arrival at Asmara International Airport, you will be met, assisted with one of our experienced guides and transferred to your hotel.
After a brief rest and breakfast, begin an exciting archeology tour of Asmara, the city called as “Piccola Roma” (Little Roma) and shining collection of modernist and - a UNESCO heritage site since July 2017 in recognition of its eclectic modernist and Art Deco world's 4th best comeback city and Africa's best city (A style of design, marked by stylized forms and geometric designs, which was popular in the 1920s and 1930s) architectural wonders portrayed in many of its buildings such as the Fiat Tagliero building, Benito's old party headquarters (currently the Ministry of Education main office), the fabulously detailed old Opera house (now Cinema Asmara), the National Museum, the Main Post Office, the Roman Cathedral, the Grand Mosque, the Orthodox St. Mary Church, the colourful market squares including the popular Medeber recycling market, the Tank graveyard and more. This archeology tour will take you through Asmara's rich history and stunning architecture.
Begin your journey from Asmara to the coastal city of Massawa. From there, continue your archeology tour by visiting two of Eritrea’s most significant ancient sites—Adulis and the Gulf of Zula.
Adulis, also known as Aduli, is located approximately 45 kilometers south of Massawa and is a key highlight of this archeology tour. Once a flourishing port city, Adulis played a major role in connecting ancient trade routes across the Roman, Egyptian, and Greek Empires. Recent excavations by joint Eritrean and Italian teams have uncovered fascinating remains, including ruins of ancient palaces, temples, walls and pottery fragments from the Middle East. The site is still an active archaeological dig, offering visitors a rare chance to witness history being uncovered in real time.
Next, visit the Gulf of Zula, a stunning natural formation considered the birthplace of Africa’s Great Rift Valley. Surrounded by rugged landscapes, this area not only offers breathtaking views but also plays a crucial role in understanding the region’s geological and historical evolution.
After exploring these archeological treasures, return to Massawa for a short city tour. Massawa, known as the “Pearl of the Red Sea,” captivates visitors with its island charm, historic Ottoman-era buildings, and rich cultural fusion shaped by centuries of trade and influence. Key sites include the Northern Red Sea Regional Museum, ancient mosques, and lively markets set against a backdrop of coral buildings and Italian-era structures.
In the evening, unwind by the sea. You can enjoy fresh seafood, take a relaxing walk along the promenade, or head to Gurgusum Beach—famous for its golden sands and excellent swimming. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply soaking in the coastal charm, this day of the archeology tour offers a perfect mix of discovery and leisure.
Continue exploring the historic city of Massawa, completing the remaining visits from the previous day. As part of your archeology tour, take in more of the city's unique architecture, old trading quarters, and cultural landmarks that reflect its centuries-old significance as a coastal hub.
Later, visit the nearby Rashaida community, known for their nomadic lifestyle and strong traditions. They herd camels and livestock and trade along the Red Sea. The women wear colorful black and red dresses with silver-threaded veils and geometric patterns.
Enjoy a traditional coffee ceremony and taste authentic local porridge while mingling with the Rashaida community. This cultural experience adds a meaningful layer to your archeology tour, offering insight into the living traditions that coexist with Eritrea’s ancient past.
Drive from Massawa via Nefasit through Dekemhare and on to the town of Adi Keyh.
Take part in an exciting archeology tour to the renowned site of Qohaito (also spelled Kohaito), located about 15 km off-road from Adi Keyh. This historic location features a remarkable collection of archaeological landmarks that reflect Eritrea’s ancient heritage.
Explore a pre-Christian temple of Mariam Wekiro, ancient tombs, giant stone pillars, prehistoric cave paintings from around 4000–5000 BC, the 1st-century Safira Dam with its 79-word Geez inscription, and the remains of ancient palaces.
Join an archeology tour with an exciting trek to Matara (Metera), believed to be the ancient town of Koleo from the 2nd century AD. Located 20 km south of Qohaito, this area holds some of Eritrea’s most significant historical treasures.
In Matara, discover a 2.5-meter-tall mysterious stele, marked by a pagan, pre-Christian sun-and-crescent-moon symbol—representing a South Arabian deity. This east-facing stele is unique in Eritrea. You’ll also explore a royal palace, ancient tomb chambers, and more as part of your archeology tour.
Drive uphill, enjoying breathtaking views and lush greenery en route to Asmara.
Stop at Segeneiti, a fertile town famous for the massive Sycamore tree known locally as Daaro. This tree is cherished not only for its shade and bee-filled branches but also for its role as a traditional gathering place for community discussions. It is also featured on Eritrea’s five-nakfa note.
Transfer to Airport for departure, as per your flight schedule.
